Monday 29th October

The variety of items shown during ‘Show and Tell’ this month display the breadth of expertise and creativity amongst the members of Sunshine Linus. We are very fortunate to have so many talented and generous ladies in our midst!

You might remember back at the September meeting Clair spoke about the weighted toys she was making for the ‘Mooloolah State School Sensory Toy Competition’. Claire was able to attend the school assembly and presentation recently where the toys she made from the children’s designs were presented to the winners. The first photo shows Austin with the Lil-Austin seal, Lilly, the child who set up the toy design competition and Zalie with the Lil-Zalie narwhal. The second photo shows a close-up of the final version of the seal.

A request by the Acute and Restorative Care Unit for the elderly (at Nambour Hospital), encouraged Claire to hone her toy making skills with these three adorable 1 kilogram weighted felines and seal.

Sunshine Linus President Susan Hoy, has also been extremely busy this past month making library bags, girl’s cotton shifts, and romper sets (perfect for the warmer months). These beautiful items are shown below.

The ‘Teddy’ theme was popular this month. Pam and Irene have been working together to create these cute little ‘Teds in beds’. Great teamwork ladies!

Beany showed one of the delightful knitted teddies she had been making.

Blue and white Ted was made by Claire.

Other creative items included ……..a very practical and easy to make bib modeled by Wendy. (The pattern will be available soon).

…..and an ingenious sensory muff.

Helen made this bag from the kimguard fabric we receive from the local hospitals.

Claire entertained us with the story quilt, ‘Brown Bear’ which utilized twelve Velcro placemats and a repetitive phrase that begins, ”Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see? I see a red bird looking at me.”

Daphne showed two bold, batik quilts that as she stated, would also be suitable for a man!

Liz showed three quilts she had assembled from blocks found on the ‘freebie table’. The first was this quirky ‘house themed’ quilt with foundation-pieced blocks,

…a very cute appliqued animal quilt and a colourful four-patch quilt.

Orrawin made us put on our ‘thinking caps’ when she showed her two quilts and asked the question, “Can you see the pattern?”   All was revealed when we got to see the back of each quilt. The first a disappearing nine-patch quilt and the second a double four-patch quilt.

Rosemary made three incredibly clever ‘touchy feely’ quilts suitably themed for a farmer, truck driver and gardener.

Dee continues to quilt a stack of quilts each month. We do not always know the makers of these quilts but thank you – they are gorgeous and very much appreciated.

Anne showed an eye-catching applique quilt that had her piecing zillions of one and a half inch strips from her scrap box.

Kaye showed a delightful Teddy quilt and a stunning needle turned applique quilt top that Lyn’s daughter found at the Op shop for a few dollars!

Somehow Kaye’s carry bag got mixed up in the ‘Show and Tell’ and we all had a giggle.

Helen showed two quilts; a quirky kaleidoscope quilt and modern baby quilt.

Claire assured us that she does make a quilt every now and then. She started this striking bargello quilt four years ago and decided it was time to pull it out and finish it!

Susan thanked the 21 ladies who attended the Action Day. As a result of their endeavours there was a pile of completed blockenspiels on the distribution table this month!

  • A gentle reminder that Sunshine Linus does not accept donations of second-hand clothing or sheets that are worn, stained or marked. Remember to check the quality of the items you donate to the ‘freebie table’. A good benchmark is to ask yourself the question, “Would I be happy to give this item to a friend?” If not, then it’s ready for the bin!
  • Volunteers are still needed for the Distribution table
  • Remember to collect your scraps of fabric for the ‘Days for Girls’ organization https://www.daysforgirls.org/
  • Contact Kaye if you are interested in assisting on Open Day Saturday 17th August 2019
  • Don't forget to check the notice board each month
  • Susan has the pattern for this cute little fellow if anyone is interested
  • See you at the Christmas Breakup – 9:30 am Monday 26th November!
