Annual General Meeting - Monday 25th March

If this year’s AGM had a theme, it would be one of gratitude.  Our President, Sharon began the meeting welcoming everyone and praising the valuable work carried out by our 84 members in what was a very busy year.

Each year, Sunshine Linus strives to meet the ever-changing needs of our clients. This year we responded to an increasingly diverse range of requests and produced high quality items to meet the increased demand from clients. Judy B advised that in 2023/24, Sunshine Linus distributed over 10,000 items to communities on the Sunshine Coast and beyond.

We say thank you to Jenny D and Denise who manage requests and organise distribution.
Thank you also to members who each month help put the items into bags ready for distribution.

The AGM provided a great opportunity again thanks to members who work to make Sunshine Linus the dynamic and supportive organization that it is.

Sunshine Linus is thankful for support from across the Sunshine Coast community.

Thank you also to everyone who quietly get on and make Sunshine Linus the dynamic and valuable organisation it is today.

NEWS FROM THE TABLES

SALES TABLE

This month the table abounded with pillowcases, silk coat hangers, potholders, small tote and laundry bags, scalloped place mats and microwave bowl holders. Fresh produce included onion jam, plants, limes, and plenty of pumpkin bought in by Leonie.

The Quilters Choice sewing machine and accessories is still available. The machine has never been used and all proceeds from the sale will go to Sunshine Linus. Thank you again to Elaine for looking after the sales table.

TOUCHY FEELY TABLE
A request was received from a new client in Brisbane. ‘Open Futures’ provides residential disability care in Brisbane.

Claire made the items below in the requested dark blue, dark green and purple colours. She made touchy feely pillow cases, grab balls and one of the largest items ever made by Claire a 2m x 3m sensory wall hanging. The project had no hanging pieces and used an amazing range of sensory fabrics including velour, plastic, fur, sequins, flannelette and velvet.

What a great way to use up scraps.

Monthly Meeting - February 2024

Our February meeting was very well attended and everyone was welcomed by Sharon and Jenny D.

Sharon and Jenny recommended that each month members take time to visit a specific table and ask the team what pieces are required to be made ready for the next month.

To begin with, the quilting table was centre stage. If you missed this month's meeting, please chat to Jill and her team at next month's meeting to find out what type of quilts are currently required. Next month a new table will be highlighted.
Please read the "Around the Tables" section of the blog for more information.

Barbara reminded us that:  ''Sometimes the most mundane items bring recipients the greatest comfort". Although these resources may not be the most exciting to make, there is a constant demand for the following practical and vital items.
  • wheelchair covers and bags
  • pillows
  • turbans
  • drainage and renal bags
Members were thanked for continuing to make and bring in these important pieces each month.

ACTIVITY DAY - MARCH 11

Barbara also advised that there were three activities organised for our upcoming Activity Day.
  1. Leone will teach us how to make rugs with strips of fleecy.
  2. Jenny has offered to teach crocheting or more advanced learning to crochet balls.
  3. Barbara will teach us how to make items from the Touchy Feely table including a rug, cube, muff and books. These items are always in high demand.
Fran's gorgeous, crocheted top has inspired me to learn to crochet.
See you at our next Activity Day on March 11!

SUNSHINE LINUS TEDDY BEARS
There were lots of bears at Linus this month. Trauma bears are always in high demand as they are perfect for calming those in distress. Knitted and crocheted toys are always popular.

A diverse array of Trauma Bears and crocheted animals.

This trauma bear comes with a backpack filled with Band-Aids.

Don't forget NAIDOC week in July is quickly approaching.

During NAIDOC week, Sunshine Linus has traditionally given every new mother at Buderim Private Hospital a Kanyini Bear for her newborn baby.

More Kanyini bears are required in the lead up to NAIDOC Week 2024.

Patterns for all bears can be found on the website.

Here is a link to the story of the Kanyini Bear.

As always at the end of our meeting, everyone chipped in to ensure distribution lists were filled and items packed away. Thank you for making Sunshine Linus a great organisation to be part of.
