26 June 2017

Members have been busy preparing for our biennial Open Day on 12 August at the Uniting Church Hall, Coronation Avenue, Nambour - this adding to our recent involvement in the Quilt Connect display at Mt Gravatt Showgrounds. Some of the Linus display there can be seen below. This event brought many inquiries and a heap of donated materials.

However, this month was extra special as Sunshine Linus celebrated their 7th birthday. The meeting was addressed by first President and founder, Judie B and 8 of the original members were present to cut the cake.

From left: Annie, Lee, Thelma, Sharon, Liz, Carolyn, Judy and Judie.

Attendance was high and the following shots show some of those in the room.

The distribution table challenged our team who sorted and labelled and packed dozens of items for dispatch.

Claire's special needs goods were, as usual, most entertaining. Her story book quilt for this month is based on One Tiny Turtle and the students at Currimundi Special School will be enchanted as the female turtle lays her eggs which hatch and head off the sea.

The rear of the quilt shows their possible trajectory on the world scale.

Animal themes this month included the paper pieced fox quilt by Anne,
dinosaurs by Liz,

and pieced animal motifs sent by Jan from Chinchilla, held here by Cynthia..

Orrawin has again used lots of small pieces of fabric to create these designs:

a large sixteen patch quilt and one using half square triangles.

Liz has also used small scraps to effect with contrasting sashing.

Both Liz and Glorianne have used the quilt-as-you-go technique to effect.

Only one appliqued quilt was displayed this month- maker unknown.

For girls there was a Wonder Woman quilt by Glorianne and for boys, a cowboy themed rag quilt by Wendy.

President Kaye brought in supplies of polar fleece that can easily be made into warm but lightweight rugs for particular needs.

There were also many knitted and crocheted rugs including two colourful examples from donated squares -
by Val and Dorothy.

Several small items were shared: fleece scarves made by Rosemary and modelled by Dee,

 hold-alls made by Doreen,
and denim hold-alls made by Claire, displayed by Liz.
Julie K was among the first to complete a top-down cardigan based on a pattern distributed by Kaye recently.

An inspiring display of the creativity and commitment of Sunshine Linus members.

Next meeting will be on Monday, 31 July from 9.30am.
