The Sunshine Linus Activity Days are always an enjoyable experience for those who attend and the August Activity Day lived up to expectations with a small group of members gathering to create and make a range of items including quilts, shawls and soft toys.
Kaye
demonstrated how to make blocks for a Jagged X quilt - a simple but
striking quilt, particularly when made with bright contrasting colours.
The pattern can be found here.
A number of the ladies came prepared to tackle this challenge. Yvonne had already made a start and had her box of pieced rectangles ready to be sewn together!
Denise hard at work. |
Carole preparing her strips of fabric. |
Wendy cutting all her fabric ready to sew. |
Of course these quilts are going to take some time to assemble but here are a couple of pictures of some of the finished blocks:
Yvonne was piecing her blocks in rows. |

Meanwhile Jenny D was busy crocheting some friendly critters.
Jenny had some helpful tips to share:
When crocheting in spirals, as usually required in Amigurumi patterns, it is easy to lose track of where rows start/finish. This is where a Running Stitch Marker thread makes it so much easier. This is just a scrap thread that you lay across your work after you complete the first row. As you complete each row you flip the thread backwards or forwards making a running stitch through your work showing the beginning of each row. It is helpful for counting rows too. When you finish the piece just pull the thread out. https://lookatwhatimade.net/crafts/yarn/crochet/crochet-tutorials/how-to-crochet-in-the-round-spiral-vs-joining/
The running stitch is the pink thread. |
Marie and Marion were busy over in their corner cutting out and sewing up fleecy shawls. They had quite a production line up and running!
Thank you to Marion, Yvonne and Wendy for proving a scrumptious morning tea!
One
more newsworthy item: This lovely quilt has been selected to be donated
to Wishlist for auction at their up and coming Spring Carnival. Further
information can be found here.
Sunshine Linus next meeting will be on Monday 30th August. Remember to book a time slot with Judie B. Hope to see you there!
