Monday 29th August: Distribution Day

Hello everyone and welcome to the August blogpost for Sunshine Linus. This month's meeting saw 52 ladies plus two new members gather together to donate and distribute items to those in need on the Sunshine Coast and beyond.

At the start of the day Elaine made sure the 'sales table' was set up and ready for business.

Elaine had made the microwave bags, glasses cases and washbags that were for sale.

The items up for raffle this month included a stunning zig-zag patterned rug created by Cynthia, a lovely white knitted rug and a sparkling bracelet.

As always the distribution tables were overflowing with beautiful items. The 'Sensory Team' have excelled this month creating an amazing array of 'touchy feely' cubes, blockenspeils and hand muffs.

Tactile muffs

These blockenspeils were extra special with their carefully coordinated pictures.

Elaine also created this tactile mat filled with lots of interesting items.

Even though Claire couldn't be with us this month she had organised for her 'Elmer’s Weather' interactive mat to be delivered to the Currimundi Special School. Elmer, the patchwork elephant, is already helping the students learn about windy, cloudy, stormy, foggy, rainy, snowy and sunny weather.

Sharon ran the formal proceedings in Kaye's absence.

Jan, who was one of Sunshine Linus' new members, was asked to draw the raffle.

The winners were Dawn, Irene and Bridget. Congratulations ladies!

During 'show and tell' there were lots of gorgeous quilts and rugs to show.

Joy had brought in her sweet 'Wonky Donkey' themed quilt top.

Lyn had made a colorful 'indigenous' themed quilt using wedged shaped blocks.

Judi had sewed and quilted two quilts using panels.

This lovely wedding ring quilt was donated by the Bribie Island Craft Group.

Anne showed a pretty quilt she had made using a friend's pattern and another colorful stained-glass quilt assembled using the 'quilt-as-you-go' method.

Barbara showed a renal quilt where she had turned the blocks upside down so the patient could see the images on the quilt when they were lying down!

Barbara also showed her pretty 'Jagged X' quilt from a previous workshop.

The 'Yarners' have also been busy creating beautiful rugs and other knitted and crocheted items for the cooler months.

Jenny knitted these two cuties.

The 'Sewing team' has also been industrious sewing numerous wheelie walker bags, toweling-topped pillow cases and clothing protectors.

Margaret sewed these beautiful children's activity bags!

And then it was time for distribution and packing-up and what would we do without our team of dedicated helpers?

Marion and Carole do some of the hard lifting at pack-up time.

Reminders:
  • Remember to check the 'wish lists' and 'what's in storage' tabs once they are posted for this month.
  • Start thinking about and making items for the Open Day next year.
  • The next meeting will be on Monday 26th September.

See you next meeting!

August Activity Day: Santa Sacks

Another relaxing Activity Day was held on Monday, 15 August with 13 ladies attending.  The task for the day was to construct Santa Sacks out of white/cream fabric and add a Christmas themed tie.  The completed sacks will be decorated by school children and used to wrap presents by Care Outreach Coolum who run Christmas in the Bush supporting rural and remote families.

Some of the completed Santa Sacks

A well run production line was set up with members cutting or ripping the sacks (in two sizes 20" x 30" or 30" x 30" plus SA), members machine sewing or overlocking the sacks and attaching the ties, while  others were ironing the completed sacks.  258 ties had been prepared before the day by Pam.

At the end of the morning all of the donated fabric for the sacks had been cut up and there were 80 completed sacks and a large quantity of unfinished sacks taken home to complete. A great effort ladies!

Next Activity Day

Just a reminder that our next gathering will be on Monday August 15th for Activity Day. We will be making Christmas bags, so bring your sewing machines and supplies. These bags will eventually be filled with items to be distributed to families in the outback. Just a reminder that only machines that have been 'tested and tagged' are permitted to be used in the hall.
