July's Meeting

Winter Warmers Everywhere

This month our meeting began a little earlier and our President Sharon reminded us about the Maleny Quilt Show on September 28 and 29. A brochure with more detailed information has been uploaded to the 'What's on and Where' section of the blog.

Jenny D asked for members to consider the size of items as some rugs and quilts have been too small to be distributed. Baby rugs are 1m square so items for adults are to be larger. Advice for sizing is also available on the blog.

Great size for a warm winter rug.

As the meeting progressed, Norm was busy testing and tagging machines. This is a free service, available to ensure our members are able to use their machines at activity days and the retreat. Thank you!

JULY FOCUS TABLE - THE YARNERS

The recent cold snaps have had us all searching for our winter woollies and anything to keep us warm and cozy. This month the Yarners have continued to produce items to keep others snug during tough times. The tables were filled with knitted, crotched and flannelette winter warmers, beanies, rugs, shawls, toys, and children's jumpers.

A cozy shawl to keep patients warm.
Crocheted shawls also work a treat.
A warm jumper for a lucky child.
Bears and beanies.
A raft of rugs.

AND don't forget the BABY PACKS!

Thanks to Marion, Dorothy and others, many new mothers receive a gorgeous colour coordinated baby pack for their newborns. The packs include six items; a shawl, cardigan, bonnet, boots, bib and toy.

RAFFLE:  A new raffle began this month with prizes including a bright lantern quilt, a bag, candle and beautiful doll in a cradle. This raffle will run for the next two months.

THE SALES TABLE

The sales table was once again filled with goodies to make winter wonderful. Items this month included an elegant doll, laundry bags, cake and lemons. Elaine had also made two tactile mats with beautiful bird backings.

FREEBIE TABLE

Don't forget to visit the "Freebie Table" to pick up materials, wadding, towelling, cottons, quilting squares and wool resources. They are sitting here waiting to be turned into masterpieces.

THE SENSORY TABLE

Was once again filled with items to be distributed to hospitals and nursing homes. Reminders once again to test any items for anything that can be easily removed.

SHOW and TELL

Barbara shared a variety of 9 patch quilts created at the recent Activity Day. Featured below are quilts for renal patients. The bottom edge is angled to enable patients to tuck their feet in. Patterns are available on the blog.

Barbara made a quilt using the Bargello technique.
Delicate embroidery pieced together by Kaye.
A quilt used as a mat by children receiving therapy for trauma.

Kaye's second quilt with 3 layers and cut seams, the end effect is very popular with older people who love to fiddle with the edging.

Faye from Thursday Quilters Bribie Island bought along a quilt the group made from an UFO and a cozy rug made by putting together smaller square. Perfect for cold winter days and nights.

Claire has fulfilled the last of the order from Gympie Special School. We were treated to an entertaining retell of 'The Very Cranky Bear ' written by Nick Bland. The lucky children will have great fun acting out the story and using the velcroid characters and accessories made by Claire.

The order also included an unusual request from a Science Teacher who requested a resource to teach day and night. It's important that all Australian students can access the same curriculum and these tactile 'Day and Night' themed interactive mats will certainly make learning fun and successful for everyone .

And what's winter without cuddling up to a couple of cats. Jenny D's 'Punk Cat' met Claire's Bianca.
