Hello everyone!
June is the traditional beginning of winter and members of Sunshine Linus have been working hard to provide resources to keep others warm through the cooler months.
The June meeting began with a surprise celebration of 13 years of Sunshine Linus. The special occasion was marked with a rousing rendition of 'Happy Birthday' and an extra special raffle. Congratulations to our six lucky winners!
Thank you to everyone who joined us and members who came from far and wide to load up the tables and distribute another diverse array of creations! Hope you enjoyed the delicious pumpkin scones and other treats with a morning cuppa.
PRICING DAY-July 17
The hall will be open from 8.00am with tables available to drop off goods in each section. Please bring tags, pens, and pins and remember to bring bags to protect the sale items. Items need to be taken home with you after pricing has been completed and returned Friday 4 August. This allows the sales table ladies to set up on Friday ready for Saturday.
Plans for our Open Day on August 5th are well under way and many thanks to those who are working tirelessly to ensure a successful day. Please help distribute flyers and check your emails especially those that may include requests for any extra support that might be needed.
During the month Barbara M, Jill P, Glorianne P and Carole F set up the display case for Linus at the Sunshine Coast Regional Show. Jill even brought along a themos for tea and coffee and Irene de Vere the Chief Steward for the Arts and Crafts section, supplied the team with a piece of delicious fruit cake for morning tea.
Many thanks to Irene for allowing us to set up a display and for the delicious cake.
Sunshine Linus members work together on a broad range of initiatives and bring a wide range of talents to our meetings. To celebrate the work of our industrious and hardworking volunteers and to provide new members (like me) with an insight into the vital role each table plays, each month the Blog will focus on the people behind one table. This month the Freebie Table is centre stage.
The Freebie Table is overseen by Sue and Annie who work with a team to ensure members have access to a wide range of donated resources. When you visit the table you will find volunteers sorting donated items of all shapes and sizes and as well as members gathering resources to inspire new creations and top up supplies.
The resources also include lots of UFO's (Unfinished Object's) waiting there for a bit of TLC. The beautiful quilts we see each month often originated from the Freebie Table. If there is something special you require, please chat with the team at the Freebie Table who will see if it is possible to source it for you. There is also a wide range of knitting and sewing patterns, knitting needles and crochet hooks, cottons, and wool etc.
> News from the Sales Table
Last month we celebrated the Sales Table. Elaine and her supporters never fail to provide an amazing range of goods for sale each month. This months goodies included a quilted lunchbox perfect for a young man, an appliance cover and a new addition was the soap mits. The mits were designed to enable someone with a broken arm to wash themselves independently, they are made out of towelling with a hand strap. Some of the other products are shown below including a beautiful 'babushka style' bag.
RAFFLE WINNERS Lorraine, Dawn, Pam Mc, and Val L,
QUILTS
Orawin bought along a range of quilts including this striking 'Angel' quilt adding length and using blocks from the Freebie Table.
A green 'Kite and Balloon'quilt also made from materials from the Freebie Table.
Orawin imaginatively named this quilt 'Everything but the kitchen sink' and made the back using all blocks.
The next two quilts were kindly donated. The first a pretty pastel made using Irish Chain and the second quilt used a delicate cream and pastel pink palate.
Jenny crocheted a cozy blanket to create a quilt pattern. The squares attach as you go along using the corner-to-corner stitch. Please ask Jenny if you'd like a link to the pattern. Kay showed us a stunning handstitched block 'Tea Cup and Teapot' quilt. The blocks were donated and the quilt will be on sale at the Open Day.
Leonie had a busy month and bought in five quilted tops. Claire's - The Ultimate Quilts Once again Claire has recreated children’s stories in 'Story Quilts' for students of Palmview Special school. The first story quilt recreates the children’s classic "Where is the Green Sheep?” written by Mem Fox and illustrated by Judy Horacek. The story is filled with rich vocabulary and lots of early math concepts for children to discuss. Children can find the green sheep hidden away in the last panel. The second story quilt is based on the book 'I Went Walking' written by Sue Williams and illustrated by Julie Vivas. The text in story begins with "I went walking and what did I see?". The predictable text is intriguing and Claire's quilt encourages children to predict which animal is hiding by recognising the tail. This very popular story has been bought to life.
