Monthly Meeting - May

Once again there was a terrific turnout for our May meeting, and the excitement is building for our Open Day on August 5.

Judy B has been working hard organising publicity. Cameron from the Sunshine Valley Gazette attended our meeting and Judy asked if anyone had a touching story to share about someone who received some 'Linus Love' to please let her know. Keep an eye out in the Gazette for the article.

An Activity Day will be held on Monday, July 17 to price goods for the Open Day on August 5. Contributors are asked to bring in all items for sale on July 17 and due to limited storage contributors are asked to store items at home until August 5. Advertising flyers are available for distribution.

A couple of housekeeping requests to consider:

• volunteers are required for the Nambour Show. Tuesday June 13 @ 9.00am to set up and Monday 19th June to pack up.

• please remember to wash all milk bottle tops prior to donating and to label all items before bringing in. Sunshine Linus labels are available at the front desk.

• making masculine items as well the beautifully feminine creations.

At the activity day in May, we were thrilled to receive a donation of from a gentleman who loves to quilt. Thank you!

As always there was a range of projects and creations both made by and available to members and fuelled by a delicious morning tea.
Delicate dolls, hand towels, tea cosies and fresh produce were available for purchase at the sales store.

The freebie table continues to provide materials to spark creative ideas for items such as the Baby Bundles for new mums in remote communities. Baby Packages are put together in beautifully colour coordinated bundles and include knitted or flannelette blankets, knitted toys with no dangerous parts, a bonnet and a baby shawl.

At our Activity Day, Barbara shared how to do Japanese Boro.
Boro is a traditional Japanese form of darning originally used by farmers and fishermen to patch clothing. Usually, indigo and maroon coloured cotton, linen and hemp materials were stitched or re-woven together to create low cost practical clothing.

During the morning Barbara displayed a Boro bag and a table runner which were used as inspiration. Members were supplied with a range of pieces and created designs using the 'traditional' colours as well as some more modern creations.

Initially, the pieces of fabric were arranged with a 2cm overlap and irregularities and fraying edges were encouraged. Once the final design was created, the pieces were first tacked into place and then stitched with cotton thread using straight or circular regular stitches.

The cold and rainy weather made it a perfect day for 'slow stitching' accompanied by a warm cuppa and bright conversation.

There was also lesson in creating 16 patch block that is cut diagonally and re-assembled forming a lovely block.
Important Reminders:
Next Meeting will be on Monday 29 May.
The Open Day is on Saturday 5 August.
Please keep making items for the sales table.
